Crossing the mighty Fitzroy River was once no easy feat—especially during the wet season, when rising waters could quickly turn a journey into an adventure.
The original township of Fitzroy Crossing was established at the river’s narrowest point, becoming a vital hub for early travellers navigating the Kimberley. In 1935, a concrete causeway was constructed, providing a crucial dry-season crossing and helping to open up the region. By the 1940s, key buildings such as the old Post Office and Police Station had been established, forming the heart of this early settlement.
With the construction of the new high-clearance bridge in the 1970s, the town gradually shifted south to its current location.
